Indian Canyons Golf Course Palm Springs, California
One of the hidden gems of golf within the Palm Springs area. The Indian Canyons Golf Course is a 36-hole golf resort located within minutes of the downtown area. The golf course is owned by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The same tribe that owns the Spa Resort Casino, Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa, as well as the popular hiking areas commonly known as the Indian Canyons.
The Indian Canyons Golf Course is probably the best golf course located within the city limits of Palm Springs, California. Most of the world renowned golf courses of Palm Springs aren’t actually in Palm Springs. PGA West (La Quinta), SilverRock Golf Resort (La Quinta), Desert Willow (Palm Desert), Indian Wells Golf Resort (Indian Wells), and Classic Club (Palm Desert) are at least a 25 minute drive from Palm Springs.
North Course Indian Canyons
When the north Course first opened in 1961 the golf course was known as Canyon Country Club. This course is located with homes on each side of the fairways. The locker room is huge and has memorabilia from its heyday. This is the course that was frequented by celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Johnny Carson, Dean Martin and Milton Berle. It also wasn’t unusual to find Gerald Ford or Lyndon B. Johnson playing a round there as well.
Today the north course is the sleeper course. It doesn’t get played as much as the newer more gorgeous south golf course but still worth playing. You will notice, like many older golf courses, the greens are a little smaller than the courses of today. Don’t worry though because the fairways are fairly wide open and easy to hit.
South Course Indian Canyons
If you have to pick between the two courses hands down pick the south course. The south course is everything you would expect in a world class Palm Springs Resort. They recently completed a bunker restoration project and the fairways and greens are almost always like carpet.
This course is located up near the Indian Canyons of Palm Springs. This is an excellent location that gets far less wind than most other golf course in the Coachella Valley. If the other end of the valley has 20+ MPH winds you can probably expect Indian Canyons to have about 5 MPH winds. Not to mention the scenery is beautiful as San Jacinto Mountains server as the backdrop.
The South Course isn’t the hardest course in the area but it’s not the easiest either. There are plenty of sand traps and water hazards to help keep you on your toes. If you have your pick between Escena Golf Club, Rancho Las Palmas Golf Course, and Indian Canyons you should play Indian Canyons.
